Once a much enjoyed event was rejuvenated and brought to life by the McLarens Group of companies with the launch of “Speed Drome”- an out door carting arena on the 23rd of September 2009.

The opening ceremony unfolded itself in full swing with the most sought after personage of the motor racing fraternity gracing the occasion.

Well known racing figures taking the karts for a spin found talented driver Ashen Silva been placed as winner. Yet another spectacular feature of the launch was the celebrity event, where local performing artist displayed their hidden talents and Sri Lanka’s popular singer Dushyanth Weeraman was victorious.

Karting is largely promoted as a cost-effective way of racing and it is the strong belief in many that with the launch of Speed Drome it will not be long before the next generation of Sri Lanka’s racing drivers will be discovered and perhaps sees Sri Lanka venture in to the international racing arena.

Speed Drome offers unlimited track layout options, electronic timing facilities and fast yet safe karts, indicating that it is a safe sport for even young children and the public to engage in. The future of “Speed Dome” includes hosting karting championships and even international meets.

Located at 260/1 Pannipitiya Road, Palawatte, Battaramulla “Speed Drome” invites you to indulge in the excitement and fun of karting.

It was then only a matter of days before the next motor sports event was upon us and I was feeling the excitement of motor racing under the shadow of the Sigiriya rock fortress.
